🟡 CVE-2026-96656

CVE-2026-96656 is a high-severity arbitrary file write vulnerability in Plex Media Server versions before 1.43.3.10861, where the TranscoderH264Options preference is appended verbatim to x264's option string and .so files are loaded at startup without signature or integrity checks. An authenticated administrator can write a malicious shared object to a chosen path, which is then executed as code when the server loads it, resulting in full RCE on the host. Exploitation requires administrative credentials to the Plex web interface, limiting the unauthenticated attack surface, but active exploitation campaigns targeting internet-exposed Plex instances have been reported.

Summary

CVE-2026-96656 is a high-severity remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability affecting Plex Media Server, specifically involving the `TranscoderH264Options` preference. The flaw stems from the application’s failure to perform adequate security checks—such as signature, execute-bit, or symbol validation—when loading shared object files in the Codecs directory. By exploiting this, an attacker with administrative access can write a malicious ELF shared object to a chosen path and execute arbitrary code, posing a significant risk to the integrity and security of the host system.

Exploitation

  • Active Exploitation: Active exploitation has been reported, with threat actors targeting Plex servers shortly after the disclosure of the "Plex2Shell" exploit chain, of which this vulnerability is a part.
  • Threat Actors/Campaigns: Attackers have weaponized the flaw to install crypto miners and establish persistence on compromised Linux servers.
  • Proof-of-Concept: A full technical write-up and working proof-of-concept (PoC) code were released on GitHub by researcher Zach Main on October 16, 2026.
  • Attack Prerequisites:
- Access Level: Requires initial administrative access to the Plex Media Server instance. - Access Type: Can be triggered remotely. - Authentication: Administrative authentication is required. - User Interaction: No specific user interaction is required once the attacker has administrative control.

Affected Products & Patches

  • Affected Versions: Plex Media Server versions prior to 1.43.3.10861 are vulnerable.
  • Patch Availability: A patch is available in Plex Media Server version 1.43.3.10861 and later.
  • Mitigations: Administrators should update to the latest version of Plex Media Server immediately. If an update is not immediately feasible, restrict administrative access to the server to trusted users only and ensure the server is not exposed to untrusted networks.

Impact

  • Access/Capabilities: Successful exploitation grants the attacker the ability to execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the Plex Media Server process, leading to full system compromise.
  • Business Risk: For internet-facing deployments, this vulnerability allows attackers to gain unauthorized control over the host server, which can result in data breaches, lateral movement within the network, or the deployment of persistent malware such as crypto miners or backdoors.
